Booklet Creep Calculator

When you fold a thick stack of sheets, the inner sheets push out further at the open edge than the outer ones. This is creep, and after trimming it makes the inner pages’ margins look narrower. This calculator estimates how much to shift the inner sheets toward the fold, based on your paper and the number of sheets. Load a PDF below; the paper helper is already open.

How the estimate works

The estimate is simple: the number of sheets minus one, multiplied by the thickness of one sheet. You can pick a common paper weight (70, 80, 100, 120, 160, or 200 gsm) or type your own thickness per sheet. The sheet count comes from your PDF after any blank pages are added to reach a multiple of four, so load a file first.

The result is spread evenly across the booklet: the outer sheet doesn’t move, the innermost sheet moves by the full amount, and the sheets in between move proportionally. It is an estimate, not a guarantee. Real paper thickness varies with the brand, coating, and humidity, so a printed test is the final check.

Gutter is a band either side of the fold on every sheet; creep shifts content on inner sheets toward the fold.

Using it step by step

  1. Load your PDF (or a sample) so the tool knows how many sheets the booklet has.
  2. Pick your paper weight, or enter a custom thickness, and apply the estimate. You can still type your own value.
  3. Look at an inner sheet in Sheets view. Its content should sit a little closer to the fold than on the outer sheet.
  4. Print one test sheet at 100% scale with printer booklet mode off and flip on short edge, then fold it.
  5. If the outer pages still look tight after trimming, raise the creep a little and export again.

When you need it, and when you don’t

Thin booklets on ordinary copy paper usually need no creep at all; the Zine default preset leaves it at zero. It starts to matter on booklets of 16 pages or more on heavier paper, especially if you trim the open edge. The Thick booklet preset uses a 5 mm gutter plus the 80 gsm estimate once a file is loaded.

Creep is not the same as gutter. Gutter keeps text away from the staples on every sheet; creep evens out the margins between outer and inner sheets. It also won’t fix a back side that prints upside down. That is a duplex flip setting (or the Rotate back pages 180° option), not creep.

To apply and fine-tune a creep value you already know, see PDF booklet creep compensation. For the difference between the two margins, read gutter vs creep.
